The Alcantara Gorges are a canyon up to 25–30 m deep, between 2 and 5 m wide, sculpted by Etna lava flows from over 8,000 years ago: the lava, rapidly cooled by the river, has created hypnotic vertical basaltic prisms (a “organ pipe“, ad “harp“, etc.) 
 The result is a unique landscape, dominated by the contrast between transparent water, black walls and lush vegetation.
